MP visits
Hatfield Travis School
MP inspects an "outstanding
school";
meets the award-winning Cook; and wishes
for a happy Christmas
Caroline Flint visited Hatfield Travis
CofE School, identified
by Ofsted as one of the country's outstanding schools
in its
annual report.
The MP presented the Basic Skills
Agency Quality Mark Award
to Chair of Governors, Ralph Silvester. The quality
mark award
is for schools that have reached a high standard in
the teaching
of literacy and numeracy.
Said Ms Flint: "Hatfield Travis
is immensely popular because
it brings out the best in its pupils. I visited every
class and the children were genuinely enjoying learning,
and parents are encouraged to help in classes and support
the school."
The MP also met pupils who put their
Christmas wishes on
a Christmas tree, including Richard Gover who wished
for
"peace and quiet" over Christmas, and Megan
Williamson
who wanted all children to not fight and to be kind
to animals.
Said Caroline: "The children's wishes were very
thoughtful.
They included wanting everyone to have a home and for
there
to be enough food in the world. It was reminder that
not everyone
in the world is as fortunate as we are."
The Don Valley MP, a huge supporter
of school dinners,
was particularly pleased to meet the kitchen staff,
Jayne Wilson-Clarke, Cook in Charge and her colleagues
Maxine Rhodes and Linda Collis. Jayne recently won a
five
star hygiene award from Doncaster Council. Said Caroline:
"Every member of staff is important in a good school
and the
cooks at Travis are no exception. The day's menu of
salmon fishcakes and lemon; quorn mince and Yorkshire
pudding;
and a salad bar with 12 varieties of salad was inspired".
Said Caroline "It is this
quality and choice of healthy food that
has led to the uptake of school diners to rise above
80%."
