Caroline Flint inspects construction of new Children's Centre
– Hayfield Lane Primary School,
Hayfield Lane, Auckley

14 January 2008

Don Valley MP Caroline Flint paid a New Year visit to Hayfield Lane Primary School this week to inspect progress on the build work for the new Sure Start Children's Centre which will be located on the school site.

The MP and longstanding childcare campaigner joined Headteacher Chris Round to see the finishing touches being made to the new centre, as site Manager Kevin Murphy supervised the floors being laid.

Said Ms Flint: "This Sure Start Children's Centre, based within the school, is ideal for parents of young children here in Auckley and the surrounding villages.

The Children's Centre, which will open in February, is part of Government investment that will take the number of Children's Centres in Doncaster to 22 by August 2008.

Said Ms Flint: "The Government has promised to ensure that Children's Centres support parents with young children in every community and here in Doncaster we are well on the way to achieving that goal."

"This Children's Centre is another real asset for the school and the community, just a few years after the school had new classrooms, library and an IT suite opened."

Said Chris Round: "This Children's Centre will include an Outreach Unit serving Auckley, surrounding villages and the Torne Valley ward. We are sure that the staff here - health visitors, nurses and family support professionals - will be make a real difference for the good of our community."

The MP then received a tour of the school from Mrs Round, which included helping pupils during a maths lesson in the I.T. suite.

"The interactive lessons using computers and whiteboards make lessons so much more interesting than when I was a child. Parents and pupils have every reason to be proud of Hayfield Lane Primary."

Hayfield Lane has 231 pupils, including nursery pupils. Teachers in its seven classes are supported by nine learning support assistants.

GETTING ON WITH THE JOB: Darren Szostak is assisted by Caroline Flint, Chris Round and Site manager, Kevin Murphy.

IN THE I.T. SUITE:
Caroline Flint and Chris Round are given a maths lesson by Year 2 pupils Thomas Marchant and Anais Senior.
