Construction begins on Robin Hood
Airport Terminal

27 April 2004

Peel Airport welcomed Caroline Flint to mark the official start of construction on the airport terminal building at Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield. The terminal building will open in Spring 2005.

Says Caroline "This terminal will be Doncaster's gateway to the world and a symbol that Doncaster is open for business. The start of this construction is the day when an idea begins to become real. For Doncaster's residents, who have taken this airport to their hearts, this is their dream becoming a reality."

Caroline made her own contribution to the construction of the terminal, by tightening a nut on a base plate to one of the columns that support the terminal. From Peel Airports' first expression of interest in this site to the start of construction has taken six years. Caroline said: "I have nothing but praise for the dedication of Peel Airports, who saw the potential of this site, have taken great financial risk and have persevered for years. Their vision is taking shape with the partnership and expertise of Bovis Lendlease, Billingtons Structures and J Ennis Construction. I am proud to celebrate their endeavours today."

Bovis Lendlease are the project managers. Billingtons, a Wombwell-based company, are assembling the steel structure.
J Ennis Construction installed the piling below ground that provides the foundation for the state-of-the-art terminal building.
