Caroline Flint backs Edlington School rebuild

4 December 2006

Don Valley MP Caroline Flint is throwing her weight behind the plan to get the Edlington School rebuild underway after a meeting with new headteacher, Kevin Oliver and Edlington school's Business manager, Andrew Jackson.

Said Ms Flint: "The opportunity to rebuild this school under a Government-backed private finance scheme is a great opportunity for young people in this area. To spend £22million on a state of the art 21st century school is money well spent and I'll be backing this scheme when the planning application is submitted.

Ms Flint said she hoped the rebuild would get rapid approval. "We are fast getting to the point where everyone has to pull the stops out to get this scheme approved and contracts signed. We hope to see a new school by autumn 2008, and I believe that target date can be reached."

The opportunity to build new schools at Edlington and Mexborough under a PFI arrangement was made available by the Labour Government in 2002. The scheme must be underway by the end of March 2007.
