MP sees Super Health Centre lift off

12 December 2005

Caroline Flint joined senior managers of Doncaster West Primary Care Trust, to see the start of work on the £2.2million Super Health Centre at Church Walk, Denaby Main.

Said Ms Flint: "The new centre is more than just a health facility. It will support people when they are sick, but will help them keep healthy, as well. The opportunity to visit the library and see your GP at the same time is a wonderful opportunity for local people to make the most of the services on their doorstep.

"Even though the building is only a steel frame at the moment, it is clearly going to be a landmark building in Denaby Main. I am very excited by the project.

"The new building is just a few yards from the old clinic, which predated the beginning of the NHS. I am proud that by 2011, over half of the buildings used by the NHS will have been built by this Labour Government."

Ms Flint said the new super centre, was an example of the excellent partnership between the Government, the NHS locally and Doncaster Council.

The super health centre is one of seven being built in Doncaster as the first phase of the Government's LIFT project, which aims to improve local NHS facilities. It will open in Autumn 2007. It is located a short distance from the Denaby Main Sure Start Children's Centre, opened in 2001. A new Sure Start Centre is due to open in Conisbrough in the New Year.

Said local mum and Sure Start worker, Sara Maye: "This new centre is going to be fantastic for the whole of the community - young and old. Centres like this are the future for local services."

The new library replaces the former Denaby Main Library which closed six years ago. Said former councillor, Gerard McLister, who campaigned to keep a library in Denaby: "I am delighted that the new health centre will include a library for the people of Denaby Main. The restoration of a vital community learning facility is an important building block in enabling our people to achieve their potential."
