Pupils
praised by PM
23 January 2006
Caroline Flint met four pupils who
got the surprise of their lives when they received a
letter from Prime Minister, Tony Blair. The four pupils:
Jessica Donk, Emily Holgate, Dawn Friel and Olivia Bennett,
from St Wilfrids CE School, Branton admitted to being
really nervous when they opened the envelope.
The letter, personally signed by the
Prime Minister, thanked the girls for the gift of a
key ring, which they had given MP Caroline Flint to
present to Mr Blair. The pupils made and sold the key
rings to raise £211 towards the Tsunami appeal.
Mr Blair's letter said: "I was very impressed to
hear about the money you are raising for a very worthwhile
appeal in support of communities affected by the Tsunami."
Emily Holgate described her parents'
disbelief that Tony Blair had written to her: "When
I told my mum, I got a letter from the Prime Minister
she said: 'Don't be silly Emily'."
Jessica Donk said: "I was surprised
that Mr Blair knew so much about our school. It made
our headteacher, Mrs Crayton, very happy! She said 'I'm
over the moon'."
Olivia Bennett was equally surprised
"I expected Caroline Flint to give the key ring
to Mr Blair but the last thing I expected was a reply."
Dawn Friel said: "When I heard
about the letter I felt really special. I was surprised
that the Prime Minister had signed the letter himself."
Said MP Caroline Flint: "During
my recent visit, Jessica, Emily, Dawn and Olivia asked
me to give the Prime Minister one of the key rings,
so I took the opportunity to tell him about their efforts
for the Tsunami appeal and about what a tremendous school
St Wilfrids is. The Prime Minister's letter shows that
he was genuinely touched by their efforts and very impressed
by the reports he has heard from St Wilfrids."
The Prime Minister congratulates the
School Council for their choice of a new uniform: "Caroline
has advised me that she has not met more smartly dressed
pupils this year."
The Prime Minister finishes the letter:
"you must be very proud of your school and deservedly
so."
