MP praises "Mr Recycling"
as new partnership
gets underway
5 July 2005
Don Valley MP Caroline Flint labelled
Denaby resident Jim Tierney as Mr Recycling this week,
as she joined Jim and local politicians for the launch
of the Doncaster West Recycling Partnership.
Said Caroline: "With Jim Tierney
as Chair, the Craganour TARA was one of the first estates
to start recycling paper and bottles. They found partners
to train people to recycle wood into furniture and bird
tables and Jim even found new uses for old flagstones
that were going into landfill. "Jim is Denaby's
Mr Recyling! This Recycling Partnership began at a meeting
in Jim Tierney's living room. Now as a Board member
of Community West Recycling Partnership he has seen
his ambitions turned into a real community enterprise."
Caroline and Jim joined Mayor Martin
Winter, Jeff Ennis MP and Tommy Joyce this week for
the launch of the Doncaster West Recycling Partnership.
The latest recycling partnership,
based in Denaby Main is the third community-based enterprise
to be established by Mayor Winter to meet Labour's recycling
targets.
Said Caroline Flint: "The Community
West Recycling Partnership is really taking recycling
up a gear. Mayor Winter has responded to Government
targets, taking recycling from a few bottle banks to
borough-wide doorstep collection, using Government and
Council money to create community run businesses. It's
great for jobs and great for the environment."
Cllr John Mills, Chair of CWRP said:
"From day one this Partnership will be collecting
from over 42,000 households and aims to reach a target
of 3,500 tonnes of waste each. A few years ago, Doncaster
threw 24 bags of waste into landfill for every one bag
recycled - now we are heading for nearly one bag in
three being recycled."
The CWRP begins life with 37 employees,
most of whom have already gained
new qualifications, using £1 million of Government
grant combined with £370,000 from the Council's
Neighbourhood Renewal Fund.
The Partnership is collecting from
42,000 doorsteps, across Conisbrough, Denaby, Mexborough,
Edlington, Balby, Tickhill and part of the town centre.
CWRP aims to collect 3,500 tonnes
of household waste per annum. This includes 10 tonnes
of paper, 1 tonne of plastics, 0.5 tones of glass and
0.5 tonnes of cans each day.
