Flint MP praises eco-students
25 June 2007
Don Valley MP Caroline Flint this
week praised prize-winning pupils from Hayfield School
as the new eco-students.
The team of pupils, known as the Iced
Gems entered the national Ice Edge competition and won
a trip to the Arctic. The team's winning design was
an eco-lock, which switches off the power to lights
and electrical appliances on standby when you leave
home and lock the front door.
Ms Flint, who made a trip in 1999
to Greenland on behalf of the Government to discuss
the future of the Arctic Circle, went to meet the Iced
Gems to wish them well and discuss their trip with them.
Said Ms Flint: "The Iced Gems
are true eco-students and I am thrilled for them that
they will get the opportunity it to visit the arctic,
which is the centre of research into climate change.
To win this trip from over 2,000 entrants, the Iced
Gems have proved what a credit they are to their school
and to Doncaster generally."
"The team's eco-lock involved
real innovation and teamwork. They have offered a chance
to tackle an everyday waste of energy that contributes
to climate change."
Lucy and will be the youngest participants
in the ten day trip, which will include visits to a
research station and whale watching.
