MP praises Local Hero
22 March 20005
Edlington crime campaigner Maureen
Tennison has been praised by MP Caroline Flint, after
being featured by the Government as one of its Local
Heroes for 2005 for her "outstanding contribution
to the community".
Ms Flint said: "Maureen Tennison
is a genuine local hero. Maureen is a remarkable influence
for good in her community. Maureen has had a hand in
so many initiatives from Neighbourhood Watch to the
deployment of Cop-Shop and the organisation of community
skips to stop the dumping of rubbish."
Said Maureen: "It was fabulous
to be included as one of the Home Office's Local Heroes.
It is nice to have community volunteers recognised for
their efforts. I know I couldn't do this without the
support of other like-minded people determined to improve
the community. This award is a tribute to everyone who
works together to turn the tide on crime and to restore
pride in Edlington."
Maureen, one of the founders of Edlington
Together, the local campaign against anti-social behaviour,
started the campaign after giving Home Office Minister
Caroline Flint and Louise Casey, Director of the Home
office Anti-social Behaviour Unit, a tour of Edlington
to highlight local problems.
Said Caroline: "Every community
needs people unafraid to take a stand. When things get
bad, because of a handful of families, the community
needs people who will step up, give residents confidence,
work with the police and turn the tide. Maureen is doing
that day in day out.
