MP welcomes road safety victory
14 March 2005
Road safety protestors, Sue Draper,
Celia Jones and Graham Fox were joined by Caroline Flint
this week to welcome the victory in their campaign for
traffic calming on Doncaster Road, Tickhill.
Ms Flint, a longstanding road safety
campaigner, said: "Graham, Celia, Sue and 800 residents
highlighted a real problem. Together we have made a
forceful case to the Council who have listened and responded
very quickly. This is a real victory for people power
and the handful of residents who collected the signatures
should be justifiably proud of their efforts."
Council officers have provided plans
for pedestrian refuges in two places either side of
the problem junction of Doncaster Road and Common Lane.

Labour Mayor Martin Winter added:
"Road safety is one of my priorities in Doncaster,
so I am pleased to tell Tickhill residents that the
pedestrian refuges will be installed near Common Lane,
hopefully over the summer, and I will be asking officers
to monitor traffic speed again once the scheme is complete."
Said Graham Fox: "All of those
who contributed to the petition can be very pleased
that the Council has listened and responded so quickly.
We look forward to the scheme being implemented as soon
as possible."
Said Sue Draper: "As someone
who escorts up to a dozen children each day across this
road, I know the peace of mind these road safety measures
will bring to their parents. I am delighted by the support
Caroline Flint has given us. When the community have
a cause she has never been one to stand on the sidelines
- and this campaign was no exception."
Caroline Flint added: "I am delighted
that here in Tickhill and generally, road safety is
being taken very seriously by our Labour Mayor and his
Highways Officers. Labour is determined to see traffic
calming, flashing warning signs, pedestrian refuges
and 20mph zone implemented across the Borough with the
support of residents. This is a sea change brought about
by a Labour government and a Labour Mayor. We are now
seeing roads that serve residents pedestrians and cyclists
as well as car users.
