MP welcomes new era for Moors
10 October 2005
Don Valley MP, Caroline Flint has
heralded the declaration of Thorne & Hatfield Moors
as part of the Humberhead Peatlands National Nature
Reserve as "the start of a new era of public ownership
of the Moors."
Said Ms Flint: "From my earliest
days as an MP, I wanted to end the destruction of our
precious peatlands and save them for future generations
to enjoy. To the Government's credit they really came
up trumps when they bought out the peat mining rights
from Scotts UK. I am delighted Elliot Morley was able
to represent the Government on this important day.
"Thanks to English Nature, the
way-marked walks, education panels and viewing points
will enable all generations to enjoy and learn from
this truly original habitat."
The MP has offered to support English
Nature in a future bid for an education and tourism
centre on the Moors.
Ms Flint also praised her former colleague
Kevin Hughes for his contribution to the campaign. "When
I first became an MP, Kevin Hughes had already been
battling for the Moors and he worked side by side with
me at every stage. He was proud of the Government's
decision to buy the Moors and I am proud of the contribution
Kevin made to bring us to today's outcome."
The new public access includes footpaths,
new signage and two car parks with access planned at
Boston Park and Ten Acre Lake, (off Remple Lane).
