Caroline Flint MP celebrates
20th birthday of Conisbrough Library
31 October 2005
Caroline Flint MP visited Conisbrough
Library this week to celebrate its 20th Anniversary
- it was opened this week in 1985 - and to promote Library
use.
During the visit, Caroline joined
staff at a book sale to promote Breast Cancer awareness.
Said Caroline: "I have loved
libraries since I was a child and I am proud that as
Conisbrough Library enjoys its 20th birthday, Doncaster
Council has the best funded library service ever in
my lifetime."
"Libraries have changed dramatically
in the 20 years this library has been open. Today, they
are not just a source of books, but a source of access
to the Internet, a centre for learning and fun and a
meeting place for local community groups.
"Conisbrough Library's 1,200
visitors a week reveals its importance to this community.
"Conisbrough Library has a Sure
Start Playgroup based here, and takes part in the national
reading challenge during the summer holidays. They have
regular visits from the CAB, Social Services and the
Conisbrough & Denaby Heritage Society. And their
work with excluded pupils, adult learners and new internet
users is all part of their educational role."
Latest Government figures show that
libraries are booming - with an increase of more than
14 million visitors nationwide last year.
