Doncaster has become a boom town
under Labour – says Blears

October 2006

The Labour Party Chair, the Rt Hon Hazel Blears, has declared Doncaster a modern boom town.

Speaking to the Don Valley Labour Party Annual Dinner, Ms Blears said: "Nine years ago, if we had said that unemployment in Doncaster would be almost halved, and we would see two new bridges across the Don, a new further education college Hub, a new Transport Interchange and Doncaster Racecourse undergoing a transformation, we would have been accused of spin.

"But I am genuinely excited by what I have seen during my visit to Doncaster. The airport has created nearly 1,000 new jobs in just over a year and several of its business parks are not even built.

"I am particularly impressed that unemployment in Don Valley is now below the national average. That is extraordinary. This constituency and the borough are a credit to the North."

Said Labour Chair, Roni Chapman: "What has been great about Hazel Blears' visit is that we haven't had to persuade her that Doncaster is changing for the better; we simply said 'See for yourself'."

Said Caroline Flint: "This is what happens when a Government puts its weight behind Labour MPs and Labour councillors who are working to attract new jobs and improve our public services. I want to bring more Cabinet members to see what Doncaster is becoming."
